As everybody knows (since I have almost made it a point for everyone to know) that I am down with bad dengue fever. The fever takes the body but the mind still looks for pre-occupations. So anyways I got an alert about a PFC one contest that is inviting amateur but interesting videos. So well I thought of giving myself a small motto and submitted two movie:
"There are 64 of us" and "Some evenings are still spent with you".
There was a little experimentation I did with both.
The first one "There are 64 of us" is in your documentary style (ideally the girl should be more nervous and beautiful instead of me) but I wanted to make a video on the lines of viral videos made on youtube and see how much appreciation it gets. I made the character name aarohi sehgal and went on to create an email account and website http://aarohiclones.blogspot.com/ for her. Once the contest gets over I might try to test and see whatall goes into making a viral video successful. My brother wondered if I am expecting something like an internet debate arising from the video whether aarohi is cloning in reality or not. And I wonder if some kid sees the video and asks me if I am the clone or the real girl.
The second one "Some evenings are still spent with you" was a video that does not show the face of the person. I wanted to see how important is face in conveying the emotion. Can we still express the pain without showing the face behind it. It consisted of calculated static shots and lots of restraint. I hope people get it that the girl is wearing her husbands shirt at the end.
Lets see which one people like more.

1) Color helps - every movie is like a painting - one needs to choose the paint before one goes to paint it.
2) Attention to detail helps - but it is of no use if you have NOT communicated it with BLOCK letters to your team mates.
3) You have to take care of everything. Period. Anything above is a bonus.
4) Get lightman in the discussion meetings too.
5) Your editor must know your shot breakdown so that he can make appropriate suggestions.
6) Quality of your movie - quality of your extras. Production Design Versus Social Design.
7) Production design of your movie determines if it is a student film or not.
8) Pre-decide the music of your film to know the rhythm of the shots.
9) If the movie is for 8 mins - have story of 4 mins to get the emotions out.
10) Take inputs from everyone on the team - they are useful - but not on the day of the shoot - before that.
11) Have good ADs who feel for your movie as much as you feel for it.

Learning from Just like Heaven

1) Assistants are useful. Team is useful :)
2) Never trust your team blindly. Check everything personally.
2) If your actors have given you dates - make it clear that in no circumstances you will change them in advance so you don't have any moral dillemma if he gets a more lucrative call in the middle of the shoot.
3) What I liked : When I said let there be one director when everyone was shouting with suggestions :).
4) Even if other person seems to be better - take your decisions - ask him to get lost if he is creatively interfering. 99% of times other suggestions are worse than your own.
5) Kill actors if they haven't mugged their lines in advance.

1) Do to gym and build He-man kinda stamina if you need to work night shift and day shifts spanning 18 hours every day.
2) Assisting for a short time helps you know how things are on the set but assisting for sustained period of time will not help you incrementally. Make movies - that will teach you more and creatively help you.
3) Don;t have useless good for nothing people on the set - they only eat away your unit people's food and interfere by talking and spoil the sound quality and give there useless comments. Don't have them.
4) Define clear roles for your assistant. Earmark points of continuity for your assistants before hand. Have meetings with your assistant. Get them as charged as you are about the movie. Tell them that it is their movie also.
5) Rehearse with actors in advance.
6) Think twice before shooting rape scenes of small girl - esp with her parents around- and make sure that they are okay with the shots in advance. Be creative and aesthetic about those scenes if possible. Shield the child from the visual detaisl of gory drama - yo uare a human after all.

3)If the time limit of movie is 3 mins then try to see your script and realize that it will be mins else you mess up the entire movie
4) Don;t work with untrained and super concious girls as your main protagonist (especially at the early stage of your career - especially if yo uhave time limit). They will sap your energy on the set. Practice wel land if during practice you realize that it is not gonna work then throw her out. P.S: However when in film school try to work with untrained actors - nothing teaches yo uacting and handling with actors better.
